Casework Opportunities

Casework is a crucial part of the work of the branch, supporting individual members with problems they may be experiencing at work.  Caseworkers can help in a number of ways: answering simple queries on staff policies, acting as an advocate for members to resolve problems informally with HR and management, and supporting members in formal grievance and disciplinary procedures.

If you would like to train as a caseworker we are keen to hear from you.  We are looking for people who are sympathetic and good communicators, with an analytical approach, but you do not need to have directly relevant experience.

In return, we offer:

  • The opportunity to really make a difference to the working lives of our members.
  • The chance to learn about other areas of the University, whilst developing skills in advocacy and negotiation.
  • An initial training course of 1 day, undertaken in work time.
  • Support from an experienced caseworker who will act as your mentor.
  • Ongoing advice from members of the team with expertise in specific employment areas.
  • Access to national UCU training courses.

If you would like to volunteer to become a caseworker then please email ucu@open.ac.uk

The course will start at 10am and finish at 4pm approximately, meeting room at Walton Hall to be confirmed. Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided and the branch will pay reasonable travel expenses for you to attend
