Branch announcement on VC appointment

UCU Executive Committee notes that Professor Tim Blackman has been appointed as new VC. We welcome him back to the OU following his four years as VC of Middlesex University, and congratulate him on his appointment.
 
Tim has been a very public advocate of accessible education and widening participation. He comes with an understanding of the OU’s teaching model and commitment to students. On leaving in 2015 he described the Open University as a powerful and broad social movement, as well as a university. We trust he will continue Mary Kellett’s good work in stabilising the institution and rebuilding staff trust and collegiality. We look forward to working with him constructively to continue tackling overwork, inequality, casualization and the marketization of HE, as well as continuing to strengthen the democratic institutions of the OU.
