External examiners - resigning in protest

Members of the UCU branch at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUCU) are currently without any pay because their employer is docking 100% of salary for 'partial performance' for Action Short of a Strike - for those lecturers who refuse to reschedule classes that were cancelled during strike action. The QMUCU branch has passed a motion calling on all external examiners to resign their positions at Queen Mary until management withdraw the threat of punitive deductions. Already over 50 external examiners have resigned their positions. QMUL UCU is also balloting for strike action over this local issue.

There is also an informal protest by academics generally against the universities that have agreed to the massive pension cuts and refused to negotiate on the Four Fights. Hundreds have already resigned including from the Open University.

If you do decide to resign as an external examiner for this reason (or have refused to take on a new examiner role) you can record it on this shared google spreadsheet as well as highlighting this choice on social media.

Please also consider donating to the Queen Mary, UCU branch's hardship fund fundraiser.
