Executive and AL Reps Committees elections

Executive Committee

It will soon be time for our annual UCU branch election of officers and executive committee members for 2024-2025, and to prepare for our next Annual General Meeting which will be held on 7th June 2024 at 1pm. 

We are sending the call for nominations a bit earlier than usual this year, to allow more time for members to think about whether they are interested in standing for election. We face challenging times at the OU and more broadly in HE. To be representative we need members from all staff categories on our executive committee.

Nominations must be submitted by email to ouelections@ucu.org.uk no later than 4pm on Friday 26th April. If you want to know more about officer roles, or what being on the executive committee involves, please do contact us at ucu@open.ac.uk and we will be happy to answer your queries or find someone to talk to you.

It is now possible to role share officer positions with another member, and we are happy to offer advice about this. 

AL Reps Committee

We re-elect our UCU AL representatives at this time every year. AL members can self-nominate if they wish to stand for election. Please consider standing for election if you have an interest in trade union activity or a desire to help your fellow ALs with employment related problems.

Our AL reps play an important role in keeping the UCU branch in touch with its AL members. They help the UCU branch by contacting other AL members at important times, and some UCU AL reps train as caseworkers so they can represent individual members who have problems with their employment.

Our AL reps meet as a committee (meetings are currently online) to discuss matters to do with AL employment, including the new AL contract implementation. If you want to know more, or to speak to an AL rep about what is involved, please get in touch with us at ucu@open.ac.uk. The calling notice file explains the self-nomination process and the deadline for self-nominations is 4pm on Friday 10th May 2024. 

Our AL reps have a small amount of paid facility time for which they can claim from the university, but, as for most union roles, the facility time we get does not cover everything we do.
